helicopter view of São Paulo (the largest city in South America, with 15 million inhabitants) with a soundtrack of broken dialogue between a woman and a man. The work explores the tension between Distance and Commitements by juxtaposing a macro view of a large city against a micro view of a domestic situation and in this way, announces the contradictions between these two perspectives.

Florencia Gullen - La Campeona del Color - 2003 - 3min22s - México

‘La Campeona del color’ is a film in the form of a promotional video about a hairdresser in Elephant and Castle, London. As part of her method for selecting the perfect hairstyle for a person, she analyses her subject’s personality in order to select the appropriate dye color for the hair. The change of style of the subject is documented whereby in the final piece the face is removed for a black void. Thus, the thorough analysis of the face to develop the appropriate hair color is contrasted by the fact that in the final piece the subject is entirely devoid of an identity.

‘Polar Bears’ is a video work completed in May 2005. Part figurative and part abstract, part environmental-tale and part personal-essay, the work examines two seemingly different stories: the first about an oil company engineer who tells me about designing a big drill site in Siberia (and cutting down an entire forest in the process) and the second about a young man’s desire for fame in the age of celebrity kings and queens. Everyone wants to be famous these days, everyone wants to be rich: there aren’t enough Polar Bears in this world. There are too many ‘artists’.

A steady camera in front of a natural landscape. Suddenly a body in fall is thrown in the landscape cutting the contemplation and even deforming it.
After a few seconds, the landscape starts to involve the body with specific materials inherent to it. As if in a sick body, it creates a membrane to attempt to insert or dissolve that strange body in its totality.
